Let’s Figure it Out!

Dive deep into art making with Aldrich teaching artist Adam Handler and explore how the human figure has been represented throughout the ages. Discover the forms, styles, media, and techniques artists use to depict themselves and others and paint, draw, sculpt, and photograph figurative works that draw inspiration from your life, yourself, and the current Aldrich exhibitions.

Week 4: Monday, July 29 to Friday, August 2
Journalation in This Gallery: An Aldrich Book-Making Experience

Design and create your own art book from scratch inspired by exhibiting artist Sara Cwynar with Aldrich teaching artist Sooo-z Mastropietro. Each day explore a different artist and art making style to incorporate in to your own special 3-D mixed media art book while also creating your own handmade paper.

Adam Handler was born in Queens, NY and grew up on Long Island. He currently has a studio in Armonk, NY. Handler studied life drawing in Italy and graduated from Purchase College with a double major in Art History and Fine Arts. He has also studied craft design with master carpenter Jorge Nieves and color photography with fine art photographer Debra Mesa-Pelly. Handler has exhibited his work at major galleries in New York City; Greenwich, CT; Canada; and Texas. Handler is currently creating a new series of works which includes painting, sculpture, and drawing.
Sooo-z Mastropietro, a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, holds a BFA in Fashion Design and Textile Design. Originally from the Hudson Valley, this serene setting mirthfully set the stage for an untapped eruption of color, clothing, and creativity. Her work as an art director in interiors cultivated her conception of “Mastropiece,” a silk painting business that infuses art with utilitarian purpose. Other endeavors include community sculpture projects, curation, art show juror, artist residencies, teaching, and playing classical bass. Her current work under the moniker, Knitiot Savant, is a unique fiber art form which she has shown all over the country in juried shows and which has appeared internationally in publications.
